American Heart Association Community Training Center Professional Classes
Basic Life Support for the Health Care ProviderBasic Life Support (BLS) for the Health Care Provider course is designed to meet the needs of health care professionals who respond to cardiac and respiratory emergencies. Content includes adult, child, and infant CPR (both one and two-rescuer,) proper treatment for the choking adult, child, and infant, and instruction on the use of barrier devices, a bag-mask device, oxygen, and an automatic external defibrillation (AED). Participants receive a course completion card valid for two years. Written exam & skills exam required. Intended audience: those who provide heath care to patients in a wide variety of settings, including in-hospital and out-of-hospital. For certified or non-certified, licensed or non-licensed healthcare professionals.
- Provider Course: This course is designed for health care providers taking BLS for the first time or those whose certification cards have expired. Approximately $50.00.
- Renewal Course: The Healthcare Provider Renewal course is designed for participants who have previously attended an American Heart Association Healthcare Provider course or the American Red Cross equivalent. Participants must present a current Healthcare Provider CPR card on the day of class in order to attend. Cost does not include $11.50 book. Approximately 3-4 hours - $32.50
BLS Anywhere
Sanford Medical Center Worthington (SMCW) provides the skills validation component of this course. The online BLS Course, BLS Anywhere, is for healthcare providers seeking first time or renewal certification. The course can be accessed at http://www.onlineaha.org at a cost of $17.50. Once the online portion of the course in completed, the participant wishing to obtain skills validation at SMCW should call the education department at (507) 372-3256 or (507) 372-3106 to make an appointment for skills practice and validation. After completion of both sections of the course, the participant is issued an American Heart Association BLS - Healthcare Provider card. Time for skills practice and validation: approximately 1 - 1 ½ hours. Cost for skills validation: $35.00.
BLS Anytime
SMCW provides the skills validation component of this course. The online BLS Renewal Course, BLS Anywhere, provides a review for healthcare professionals who have prior CPR training and can be accessed at http://www.onlineaha.org at a cost of $17.50. Once the online portion of the course in completed, the participant wishing to obtain skills validation at SMCW should call the education department at (507) 372-3256 or (507) 372-3106 to make an appointment for skills validation. After completion of both sections of the course, the participant is issued an American Heart Association BLS - Healthcare Provider card. Time for skills validation: approximately 1 hour. Cost for skills validation: $30.00.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Course provides the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate and manage the first 10 minutes of an adult ventricular fibrillation/ventricular tachycardia cardiac arrest. Providers are expected to learn to manage 10 core ACLS cases: a respiratory emergency, four types of cardiac arrest, four types of pre-arrest emergencies, and stroke. Intended audience: personnel staffing emergency, intensive or critical care departments - emergency medical providers such as physicians, nurses, emergency technicians, paramedics, respiratory therapists and other professionals who may respond to a cardiovascular emergency. The card is valid for 2 years from month of issue.
- ACLS Provider Course: This program is for students who do not have a current ACLS card, or for those students renewing with current cards who wish to take the full program as described above. 2 days, approximately 16 hours - $130* + book: ($30)
- ACLS Renewal Course - Registrants must hold a current (non-expired) ACLS card. If a participant’s last ACLS card was not issued by SMCW, a copy of the current card must accompany registration. Current BLS / CPR skills are required. The course will consist of a series of teaching / evaluation stations including airway management, cardioversion / defibrillation, arrhythmia management, pharmacology, and a written evaluation. An ACLS Provider card will be issued after successful completion of the stations in this course. 1 day - (approximately 8 hours) - $85* + book if needed ($30)
- Heartcode ACLS Anytime- SRHW provides the skills validation component of this course. This CD-based learning program provides an alternative to traditional classroom instruction. Cost of the program is $105.00 according to AHA website. For purchasing information, go to http://www.onlineaha.org. After successful completion of the CD component, students are required to take a skills test with an AHA-certified ACLS instructor in order to receive their ACLS Provider Card. Participants wishing to obtain skills validation at SMCW should call the Education Department at 507-372-3256 or 507-372-3106 to make an appointment for skills validation. After completion of both sections of the course, the participant is issued an American Heart Association ACLS Card. Time for skills validation: approximately 1 ½ hour. Cost for skills validation: $45.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support
The goal of the Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is to provide the learner with information needed to recognize infants and children at risk for cardiopulmonary arrest, strategies needed to prevent cardiopulmonary arrest in infants and children, and the cognitive and psychomotor skills needed to resuscitate and stabilize infants and children in respiratory failure, shock, or cardiopulmonary arrest. Intended Audience: Licensed Healthcare Providers such as pediatricians, house staff, emergency physicians, family physicians, nurses, paramedics, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals who are responsible for the well-being of infants and children. Successful course completion is measured through written exam and satisfactory skill performance. Course completion cards awarded for successful completion and are valid for 2 years from month of issue.
- PALS Provider Course - This program is for students who do not have a current PALS card, or for those students renewing with current cards who wish to take the full program as described above. 2 days, 16 hours - $165.00* + book: ($35)
- PALS Renewal Course - The PALS Renewal program is designed to facilitate a review of PALS skill and knowledge for current PALS providers to enable the participant to successfully renew their provider credential. If a participant’s last PALS card was not issued by SMCW, a copy of the current card must accompany registration. Current BLS / CPR skills are required. Successful course completion is measured through written exam and satisfactory skill performance. Course completion cards awarded for successful completion. 1 day (8 hours) - $85* + book if needed ($35)
