Researchers are learning more and more about causes of Alzheimer's disease and how to fight it.- Here are some preventive steps for lowering your risk:
- Participate in mentally challenging activities such as crossword puzzles, playing a muscial instrument or learning a new language;
- Remain physically acive;
- Develop a strong social network;
- Maintain a healthy blood pressure;
- Stay an appropriate weight -- belly fat is of special concern as a risk factor;
- Get adequate levels of Vitamin D -- exposure to sun promotes Vitamin D production in our bodies, but taking supplements or eating fortified foods (e.g., milk and cereal) can increase one's Vitamin D levels;
- Eat fish regularly -- those "good fats" that fish contain (omega-3 fatty acids) promote healthy brain functioning;
- Don't dismiss coffee! Though still preliminary, studies have shown that people who drink three to five cups of coffee a day are at lower risk;
- Prevent type 2 diabetes -- new studies show that peopl with diabetes are at increased risk for Alzheimer's Disease.
