Sanford Worthington Medical Center

Sanford Worthington Medical Center is a 49 bed general acute hospital and is staffed by a multi-specialty medical staff and close to 300 employees. The hospital was originally built by the City of Worthington in 1951.
  • In 1971, a 49 bed rehabilitation and extended care wing was built. Due to reimbursement changes for extended care patients, the unit was converted to general acute care, a 10 bed inpatient mental health unit, and a 5 bed nursing home. The nursing home beds were discontinued in 1998, replaced by swing beds, and the 10 bed inpatient mental health unit was discontinued in July 2010.
  • In 1993 a $4.5 million addition was built which includes a surgery department, outpatient surgery and recovery, new intensive care unit, and expansion of the medical records department and library, and a remodeled emergency room entrance.
  • In April 1996, the hospital entered into a network agreement with Sanford Health System, thereby becoming a part of the Sanford Health family.
  • In 1999, the $3.1 million Women's Center was completed which provides five LDRP rooms (labor, delivery, recovery, post partum), six gynecological rooms, nursery and intensive care nursery, family waiting area, and one hospice room.
  • In July 2001, the renovation of the front entrance and parking lot expansion was completed at a cost of $1.7 million. The new addition expands the waiting area and provides for private admitting offices and greatly expands the parking area.
  • In July 2008, Worthington Regional Hospital was bought by Sanford Health and became a member of the Sanford Health family.  Sanford Health is an integrated health system headquartered in Fargo, ND and Sioux Falls, SD and consists of two long-standing organizations that merged in 2009. Sanford Health is now the largest, rural, not-for-profit healthcare system in the nation with a presence in 111 communities in eight states.
